German Settlers of South Bend
The story of the first German immigrants to northern Indiana also is the story of the growth of South Bend and the development of the surrounding woods and marshes into farm land. Starting in 1848, the immigrants constructed buildings, opened breweries and delicatessen, and were largely responsible for bringing music and culture to South Bend.
